The Future of Business Analysis

As we launch into the new century, the landscape of methods, tools, and techniques for developing systems has evolved rapidly, with the last ten years seeing that evolution only accelerate. Many more organizations are embracing these new methods as a matter of survival in the digital age--that means both opportunity and the challenge of change. Where these approaches are being applied with dramatic and sustainable success, no roles are left untouched.

For no one is that more true than for the business analyst. We look in vain through these new approaches to find “business analyst” even being mentioned. But if we look more closely, we see that the fundamental “jobs-to-be-done,” as they say in the world of innovation, remain. They are wrapped a little differently, spread across other named roles and disciplines, and come with a new twist of viewpoints and expectations of the practitioner.

These jobs-to-be-done also lie in a zone that for many organizations has been hard to crack, and that remains perhaps the biggest barrier to the sustainable innovation and adaptability at scale that will be the hallmarks of those organizations that flourish in the coming years.

There is tremendous need for core business analysis skills, mapped to a somewhat different landscape and with some growth required. There is opportunity and challenge.

In this presentation we’ll summarize the situation, bring into focus areas where business analysts’ contributions are badly needed, and identify additional skills that will help enable them.
